Animal Humane Society's Kindest Cut program offers a select menu of basic and affordable dental cleanings and minor tooth extractions for pets of income qualified pet owners.
We do not have the ability to perform dental x-rays, major extractions and other advanced dental procedures. If your pet requires dental work that Kindest Cut does not provide, please see your local veterinarian or consider visiting another clinic.
We require a presurgical exam before you can schedule your pet's dental procedure. You can visit Melrose Animal Clinic at any time during walk-in wellness hours for this presurgical exam.
Pets over the age of 5 will require presurgical bloodwork. Any pet with dental disease grade 3 or 4 will also require presurgical bloodwork and preoperative antibiotic therapy.
Melrose Animal Clinic staff will schedule your dental appointment as soon as the presurgical exam is complete.
All dental patients receive a dental examination, general anesthesia, teeth scaling, polishing and fluoride treatment, intravenous fluid therapy, antibiotic and pain medication during their dental procedure, three days of postoperative pain medication if indicated, and a complimentary nail trim. Additional pain medication is available upon request at a cost $7 plus tax.
Preoperative antibiotics: $10-20 depending on the size of the pet.
Preoperative blood panel (complete blood count and minichem): $32
Minor dental extractions: $5 per tooth root, teeth have anywhere between 1 and 4 roots depending on the type of tooth.
Grade 1 dental cleaning: $100
** Mild gingivitis and slight amount of plaque and dental tartar are present. Appropriate and frequent tooth brushing and chewing could reverse these conditions.
Example of grade 1 dental disease
Grade 2 dental cleaning: $120
** Mild to moderate gingivitis, mild to moderate tartar is visible on several teeth, bleeding of gums can occur easily with chewing or probing of the teeth, and bad breath has started. The current dental issues in most cases can be resolved with a professional dental cleaning, polish and fluoride treatment.
Example of grade 2 dental disease
Grade 3 dental cleaning: $130**
Moderate gingivitis and redness of gum tissue, moderate tartar is visible on most if not all teeth. Your pet may be exhibiting signs of oral pain, such as difficulty chewing or pawing at the mouth. Bacteria from the mouth are likely causing bone loss, dental ligament weakness and potentially damage to internal organs. A thorough cleaning as soon as possible is the best possible chance of preventing further damage to the mouth and body.
Example of grade 3 dental disease
Grade 4 dental cleaning: $150**
Severe gingivitis and likely bleeding or ulcerations of the gum tissue, severe dental tartar and bone loss. At this point bone loss is occurring in the mouth, bad breath is obvious and present at all times, and bacteria from the mouth is circulating through the blood stream and likely affecting internal organs. Tooth loss is extremely likely in these cases and ongoing dental care will be needed to save those teeth with remaining boney attachment.
** Preoperative antibiotics, blood panel, and dental extractions not included.
